Phase 2: Emerging
… as a real person in the new world
SPECIAL-GROWTH PARTICIPATION
Story Building with Pictures
150 hours with your nurturer
1200+ words gained
Lifestyle Participation Activities
Experience lots of public activities — on the streets, with technology, possibly in homes
Try to “emerge” to a few host people.
Look for host people you could interact with more in the next phase
By the End of the Phase
real but very limited connection with host people becomes possible
some host people catch glimpses of your personality
deep relationships are still not really possible
This phase can be a lot of fun. Your understanding of simple stories will grow a lot and you’ll start being able to speak more easily. Communication — and therefore building relationships — will still require a lot of effort and patience, but it’s possible. Keep going and challenge yourself especially when you’re in the lead in the Story-Building activities. This phase is also best done intensively (20-25 hours per week with your nurturer).
Phase Guide
The Phase 2 English guide is here. Other languages are here. Some of these guides have been adapted for the special challenges of growing participation in different host worlds.
Orientation
The activities and your times with your nurturer will be different in Phase 2. Use this orientation to talk about what you’ll be doing and how to do it.
Materials
There are many wordless picture stories that are appropriate for Phase 2. Another important type of pictures are busy pictures and picture series that represent the steps in processes (like making tea or going to the doctor). These are used in Phase 2 and in later phases to give practice understanding and talking about complex, detailed stories. Here are some books and other materials (amazon.com) to get you started. Many of the books listed in the guide and document above are unfortunately out of print but can be found online. Your coach may be able to help you find others and provide ready made pages to use as for your Word Log.
